The Sunshine of Your Life
It is estimated that Vitamin D deficiency affects over 2 Billion people globally. This is a big deal because Vitamin D is a big deal.
But what is it exactly? Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin but also an important neuro-steroid hormone responsible for many elements in brain development and behavior. It is vital to immunity and to other physiologic functions and also increases brain levels of glutathione, a powerful natural antioxidant that is your body’s most important tool for detoxifying and excreting heavy metals. Vitamin D also helps us absorb the minerals calcium and phosphorous, playing a vital role in forming and maintaining strong bones and teeth, regulates normal immune system function, maintains heart and lung health, and combats depression.
Regular sun exposure is the most natural and optimal way to get enough vitamin D. To maintain healthy blood levels, it is recommended to get 20–30 minutes of midday sunlight, several times per week. People with darker skin may need a little more than this, and your exposure time should depend on how sensitive your skin is to sunlight.
Vitamin D and COVID-19
In early May 2020, researchers discovered a strong correlation between severe vitamin D deficiency and mortality rates after studying global data from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
A consistent trend the researchers noted was that patients from countries with high COVID-19 mortality rates, such as Italy, Spain and the UK, had lower levels of vitamin D compared to patients in countries that were not as severely affected. They also noted a strong correlation between vitamin D levels and cytokine storm -- a hyperinflammatory condition caused by an overactive immune system. This reaction can severely damage lungs and lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome and death in patients.
